Wore Stories: Cabin Fashion

In case you missed it, I talked about my packing technique in cabin fashion pt.1 and here is another of my outfits. Nothing fancy, it was HOT during the days, so I opted for non-clingy dresses and tops to beat the heat!

Pie Pops

Yesterday I shared photos from my sister's baby shower, and the star of the snack show was pie pops! We made 3 different kinds, and today I'll tell you how to make them!

What you need:
1. 2-3 Pie Dough Recipes
2. A circular cookie cutter, a little bigger than oreo size
 3. Jam or Pie Filling of your choice (we used 3 flavors of jam
4. Egg Wash which is just egg whites
5. Sucker Sticks (I got these at Michael's)

On a floured surface, roll out the pie dough so that it's an even thickness, probably about 1/8" thick, then cut out the circles (not pictured); you will need 2 circles for each pie pop.

1. Place one circle on the pan, place one sucker stick in the middle of the circle, at least halfway up, maybe a little more. You need the stick to be able to support the weight of the pie once it's baked.
2. Place jam or pie filling in the middle of the circle, about half a teaspoon full
3. Place the second circle (floured side down so it sticks better) over top of the first, crimp the edges with the end of a sucker stick or a fork (we found the sucker stick worked best)
4 & 5. We used a fork to prick the first letter of the flavor in the pie pop
6. Wipe with egg wash (we used a bbq brush), just one swipe will do :)

Bake at 325 for 12-15 minutes, we let them cool on wax paper
*TIP* if you don't have wax paper, you can use empty cereal bags opened up into a rectangle

These were delicious!  Heavy on the crusty flavor (I love it though so that didn't bother me), so I might try a bit of a bigger circle next time to be able to put more filling in, but overall I'm very happy with how they turned out!  They were definitely a crowd pleaser, and a fun party treat :)

A Baby Shower

The other day I showed you some stuffed animals I made for my sister's baby shower, and here are some pictures from the shower! I wanted to make it sort of like a cute party, so I decided to try Pie Pops which I've been wanting to try for a while now, they turned out SO good and super cute for the shower

I made the flavor signs, and we also pricked the letter of what flavor they were into the pie itself.

I looked up some baby shower games and tried to find some that weren't so cheesy. One of the ones I found was 'put the diaper on the teddy bear' which is exactly what it sounds like except the people playing have to use oven mitts to do so! It was fun

I love baby girl clothes, they're so small and cute

There were a lot of people crammed into their bonus room but it was a good night.

Pie pops recipe coming soon!

Wore Stories: Cabin Fashion

I usually hate packing, and so I started planning outfits instead of just throwing some tops and bottoms into the bag. I bring way less and I rarely have trouble deciding what to wear because I've already put outfits together! Here's my travel outfit, and part 1 of cabin fashion

Being Crafty: Stuffed Animals

Earlier in August I made some cute stuffed animals for my sister's baby shower! I followed this Fox Pillow DIY and Little Birdie DIY from A Beautiful Mess

Both of them took me about 3 hours, and I love how they turned out! Gave me a good idea for something to use up all my cotton and felt fabric scraps! Let me know if you try these DIY's, I'd love to see them!

Vivi Dot

I recently purchased the cutest necklace from Vivi Dot, and I just love it!  It's so unique from the other necklaces I have, but I'm really liking the style, it's fun and super cute.

I was her very first Etsy sale, so she sent along some extras! I love receiving packages in the mail and the little goodies inside make it that much better :)

I'm currently at the cabin with my family, having a wonderful time! More photos of the above outfit coming soon!

Wore Stories: To a Wedding

I just bought the CUTEST lace dress this week and I was so excited I had somewhere to wear it so soon! It was my husband's cousin's wedding, and I was super comfy in this all day.

*I actually ended up wearing a pastel-y pair of olive green tights instead of these grey ones because I cut a piece that was 'pilling' and it created a hole which continued to get bigger :( sad. Next shopping trip-find new light grey tights!

My Day Job

Remember that time when I forgot to take my name tag off for an outfit picture? Well I though I'd share with you a little bit about my day job.

I am the manager at a store called Ten Thousand Villages (Canadian Website, American Website) which is a fair trade gift store (and more)!

If you're not familiar, Fair Trade means that the producer of the product is paid a fair wage for their products. Ten Thousand Villages seeks out artisan groups in developing countries to purchase product from. A fair wage is determined by the need of the artisan group.

We make sure they have enough money to provide food and shelter for their families, send their children to school, purchase the materials they need to make their products and this is all decided with the artisan group to make sure they are being paid fairly in their eyes as well.

Every item we sell in the store is handmade, one at a time, often using recycled materials. Nothing is mass produced, no two items are exactly the same! We sell a wide range of items, from coffee to jewellery, games, onyx ornaments and candle holders, baking items such as shredded coconut, chocolate chips, gluten free pasta and quinoa.

At Christmastime we partner with MCC to sell Living Gifts which is a donation to a certain project or item that will then be provided to people in developing countries. Here are some examples

My job is to order products, merchandising throughout the store, office tasks such as answering emails, paying bills, doing the books, etc. I love this job, it makes me feel so amazing that I can work somewhere that is making such a difference in the world! It brings daily perspective to the contrast of our lives in North America to those living in these developing countries who work just to survive, while we work to live comfortably. It's crazy.

Another perk is that this is a part-time job which provides me with the time to work on my business, Heidi-and-Seek Boutique where I also work by hand and make products from recycled materials! It's a neat contrast :)

So now you know a little bit more about me and what I do! If you're new to this whole 'Fair Trade' thing, make sure you look into it, and learn why it's important!! Shop Fair Trade whenever you can, there are grocery stores and health food stores that are stocking fair trade food items, and there are a lot of other companies starting to get on board with the fair trade movement!
